The Bostan of Saadi of Shiraz by SaadiThis is a book listed by the Guardian with the 100 best Books Ever And it is an interesting read short and with some wisdom Perhaps I am wrong and it is a lot or even Infinite Wisdom It must be surely for some I have my doubts thoughI need to start on a positive note I am reading some best self help psychology and spiritual classics so I should show some progress even if one psychologist condemns this habit of imposing on ourselves and calls it “Must arbation” which is bad and opposed to masturbation which is goodBostan contains a lot of sound advice wise stories accumulated through centuries it talks about humility as the path to Greatness look not for godliness in a self conceited man love for virtue Eminence does not consist in outward show vaunting wordsThe language is very beautiful “If thou desire greatness abandon pride” – how about self –esteem A book I am reading now is the psychology classic The Importance of Self Esteem“An ass covered with a nice cloth is still an ass”I agree and I can see one right next doorThe book gets a bit violent at times “your enemydash out his brainsTo get the whole point of the book you need to be a believer Saadi says that it is not the tiger that gets the food but God gives it to him –and I guess to everyone I still search for that Truth indeed for the Truth“The poor man is a king whose wife is Obedient”now try and appreciate that in the XX th centuryOr this other piece of ancient rhetoric“It is better that a vicious son dies before his father”Of course there are stories which praise ualities virtues that are still noble today kindness courage In a desert this kind man takes his hat to a spring and brings water to a suffering thirsty dog”There are cultural historical and religious differences which impede at least this reader from really enjoying this book

Whatever context I had for this purchase was forgotten long ago Of Saadi of his Bustan I knew nothing My paperback from Forgotten Books one of the only translations available was in fact a printer scan of the original hardcover located somewhere at the University of Toronto So a copy of a translationOn the translation itself Captain H Wilberforce Clarke RE has this to offer“The original is in Persian verse This translation is in prose To render the Bustan in verse one should be a poet at least eual in power to the author Even then it would be well nigh impossible to clothe the Bustan in such an English dress as would truly convey its beauties” pviiiThus a curious mix of emotions presented itself disappointment that I would not be reading even a semblance of poetry and a begrudging respect that the Captain acknowledged his faults and the limits of his ability Naturally the disappointment was stronger And then“Moreover if such a translation could be prepared—no matter how beautiful it might be in execution—it would be of little advantage to the student That which is now offered is so literal and so annotated as to encourage the hope that it may in a great measure relieve the student from the labour of consulting a dictionary” IbidMoreover I learned this translation’s intent was to be a resource for those who had been looking to work in Her Majesty ueen Victoria’s Indian Civil Service or something“The tales or discourses marked a and c need not be read for the High Proficiency Examination in Persian in India” p423How utilitarian Let’s recap Not only is this a verse translation but the stated authorial intent is for it to be a proto SAT prep guide for long dead Indophile Brits Alas uixote in the flesh Alas I still read the whole thing For“When one couplet out of a thousand is pleasing to theeIn the name of manliness restrain thy hand from criticism” p17For if in light of all this Wilberforce managed to preserve even one iota of Saadi it will have been worth it Why You have to understand firstly that humans undergo a thought process known as “rationalization” by which they convince themselves that whatever they had to suffer through had some deeper meaning and secondly that failure in this process results in Truth read existential despair Note further that this idea in this particular phrasing would not have occurred to me had I not picked up Clarke’s Bustan; the combination of any text and you actualizes a uniue generative potential The video game Metal Gear Solid V superbly designed as it is insists on searing its creator’s name into your eyes at every opportunity When you initiate any of the dozens of missions propelling the storyline a credits roll pops up just like back when the movies played the credits before the picture and shouts “CREATED AND DIRECTED BY HIDEO KOJIMA” and a few seconds later “STORY BY HIDEO KOJIMA” This by any reasonable standard of authorship is beyond obnoxious especially when you consider the fact that an actual scrolling white text on black screen credits roll plays both when you beat half the game and when you beat the final boss Not even Milan Kundera hell not even Woody Allen break their works’ metafictional immersion by insisting on their authorship Now I’m picturing an author at her book reading obliuely exclaiming after each uestion in the A “And in case you forgot it was I Judith Easterlin Who wrote this book The Secret Life of Pebbles Me Judith Easterlin” before staring into the distance grinning cheek to cheekSaadi for his part injects his name so liberally throughout the Bustan that we never forget it is he who has furnished us with its wisdom “Listen to the words of Saadi the wise one the accomplished poet and you too will be wise and good” imagines the voice in my head This perhaps not hubris but certainly pride reeks of hypocrisy Chapter IV is devoted to Humility and thus diminishes the valence of his verses Unless the greater lesson is that nobody—not even the great Saadi—is perfect but that’s doubtful because it’s a reader’s projection and not a textual meaningOn the other hand our society fetishizes no archetype higher than the saint who tells no one of his sainthood as exemplified by Nicholas Winton Indeed we tend to believe that to broadcast one’s moral fortitude in any fashion to any degree is to diminish its goodness; ‘tis better to have virtue than to virtue signal To this I have two objections Caveat the first There are certain virtues that by virtue of their signaling increase in virtue—most obvious in cases where they encourage others to act virtuously to emulate moral leadership Caveat the second If a virtue is not signaled does it really exist With regards to literary antecedents an obvious comparison would be Aesop’s Fables but for the hell of it let’s go with the recent Metamorphoses because the latter like the Bustan is poetry But there is a world of difference underneath the structural similarities of verse and parable The ethics of the Bustan are direct—do this not that—while those of Ovid are hidden Yet the Bustan is a work of metaphor where “Each word of Sa’di has seventy two meanings” while the Metamorphoses conjure literal images In the former the majority of characters are unnamed and anonymous suggesting a common bond of humanity beneath our temperamental variation In the latter individuality is raised to colorful heights with such figures as Arachne and Orpheus Saadi wove rhyming couplets while Ovid spun dactylic hexameter; the Sufi journeyman traveled far and wide across the Middle East while the Roman poet confined himself to two sitesHowever the most fundamental difference of all lies is the works’ instrumentality If Metamorphoses is ars gratia artis Bustan is ars gratia Dei Saadi’s moral lessons like Ovid’s may help readers become better humans in this world but the bedrock upon which they are built is that of Islamic theology; act well so that you may curry favor with God so that in the final judgment you will ascend and not descend A current of desperation courses through the final chapter On Prayer where Saadi directly addresses God pleads forgiveness and resigns himself to whatever fate for which he is destined“If Thou pardonst sin to the extent of Thy liberalityThere remains no captive in existenceAnd if Thou becomes angry to the extent of sinSend to hell; and ask not for the balance” p408Now for the superficial part As you know I don’t have a codified system of star ratings and so must justify each case ad hoc The you read the it seems foolish to apply a universal aesthetic standard across all books of all categories as do some top reviewers here So four stars why I enjoyed Saadi’s stories but not the form in which I had to read them It was indeed a slog Ultimately what elevates the Bustan from mere satisfaction to the realm of literary greatness is the poetic form itself which is here all but obliterated like a Michelin starred meal served in an alleyway instead of its rightful banuet hall However Wilberforce's translation is nevertheless a faithful one; I get the sense he was a principled man one who refused to reduce for the sole purpose of literary digestibility This translation from 1879 somehow still remains the most comprehensive and must thus be given its proper dueFavorite Couplets“By the breath of the drum the rich man became awake; What knows he as to how the night of the watchman passed” p70“Seest thou not that when the knife is at the headOf the pen—its tongue nib is swifter” p101“Hear thy own character from the enemy; becauseIn the friend’s eye whatever comes from thee is good” p103“Garlic overpowers the rose perfume; The sound of the harp becomes weak through the drum” p228“In that water whose shore is unknownThe swimmer’s pride is of no avail” p276“A diram of silver makes the beggar satiated;Firídún with the kingdom of Persia—half satiated” p295“So long as thou utterst not speech to thee there is power over it;When it becomes uttered it obtains mastery over thee” p304“A person knows not the value of a day of pleasureSave on that day when he falls to hardship enduring” p351“Strive now when the water possesses only thy waist; Not when the torrent passes over thy head” p376“Oh bone cage knowst thouThat thy soul is a bird; and its name spirit” p383
