A truly uniue imaginative collection of short stories that run the gamut from one of my favorites a creepy compelling tale of a beautiful mechanical doll and a teenage boy to another about a crazy island populated by a thick primordial soup of strange creatures and a family of four including a father with a gun who shoots and cooks the beasts for family meals Another favorite is the story of what goes through the head of an ER doctor Paschal himself is an ER physician one night while dealing with a bleeding to death drug addict The collection ends on a bittersweet and surprisingly dare I say cute short story about two brother puppies

Dean Paschal Ô 2 Summary

By the Light of the JukeboxOk a drug addict's disturbing visit to an emergency room a boy's seduction by a clockwork. I needed Paschal after coming across the wonderful Moriya in an anthology though that story appeared to be a bit of a departure Most of the stories involve troubledtroubling male first person or first canine narrators with at least hints of troubled relationships with women The narrators' voices are superbly developed and compelling and drive the stories through complex twists and surprising perspectivesI was very impressed by the title story It starts like an unassuming smarmy barfly monologue then I'm drawn into an increasingly uncomfortable space and the narrative slips uickly out of control Sautéing the Platygast is my kind of science fiction; the rich and detailed world building is not ruined by laborious explanations Characters are deftly sketched; we only get tantalizing glimpses of a luxurious trove of details; thoughtful uestions are posed and no obvious answers offered It's what I was hoping for in Vandermeer's Southern Reach trilogy before he surrendered to genre conventions in the later booksGenesis is also beautifully done interviews always bring up Paschal's day job as an ER physician like the narrator I'm not a cute puppies kind of guy but The Puppies is totally memorable and adorableAn interesting interview choice uote from the interviewBy the time I actually went to medical school I went for one reason in order to become a better writerThis reminds me of one of my favorite photographers Max Aguilera Hellweg who went to medical school after working on the photos in The Sacred Heart An Atlas of the Body Seen Through Invasive SurgeryAndI sometimes say to people that I realize my work is most likely to be read in distracting situations on airlines or busses on streetcars or at the beachI feel a bit embarrassed to admit that I read half of these stories on my commute I'd meant to dip into a couple paragraphs and before I knew it I'd almost missed my stop
