A ueer Kind of Death is an interesting time capsule of mid 60s attitudes towards race gender and sexual orientation Much of the sexual liberation in the book feels fresh and contemporary including a bisexual protagonist Seth sexually liberated female characters and frank discussions of romantic relationships between gay and bi male charactersA challenge is how the book handles its detective Pharoah Love First he's not really the protagonist Instead the book focuses on his love interest Seth; he's sidelined in his own story Also the way the book addresses him as a black character can feel troubling today as some of the characters get away with unacceptable racist banter at his expense That said Pharoah Love is proactive smart and attractive one of the bright spots in the book overallAll in all A ueer Kind of Death is an interesting read It has one too many twists in the conclusion and its mixture of the past and present can lend the narrative a dreamlike uality but it has an engaging and well paced plot It also features a lovely writing style with many charming mid century touches Taken for what it is a trailblazer in the gay mystery genre there is a lot to like here despite its imperfections
