Full disclosure I received a free e ARC for review through NetGalleyTooth Pearl and Eezy are BFFs Partners in crime Booze hounds Good time girls said in an old timey voice Scavengers Would be nudists Pod mates Oh and they're also mermaids When the trio discovers and then promptly drains a stash of shipwreck wine they convince Eezy to grow them legs using her magic so they can hunt down some spirits on dry land What could go wrongEverything of course Eezy knows how to transform them into human women but doesn't know the spell for changing them back Liuor costs money and money usually means a J O B Sleeping in the alley is a no no and for some strange reason everyone keeps telling them to cover up their boobs Luckily bartender Vivi takes them under her wing giving them a place to stay helping them find work and just generally keeping them out of trouble Or trying to anyway Tooth is a bit of a brawler Eezy has an aversion to clothes and the ladies unintentionally commit crimes on the regular THIRSTY MERMAIDS is a weird raucous and silly fun time with an unexpectedly mushy heart at its center There are so many moments of bizarre hilarity here from Vivi trying to explain capitalism to merpeople who work on the barter system natch to her finding Eezy chilling in her giant recycling binand just rolling with it Tooth Pearl and Eezy are not at all what you'd picture mermaids looking like and I am so here for it Tooth and Pearl are brash and vulgar seemingly at home in a motorcycle bar than a castle under the sea And Eezy with her eel like shape and wicked tats dear Eezy You just want to scoop her up and give her a hug It isn't hard to see how these three became a tiny little pod of their own The cast is incredibly refreshingly diverse sometimes in ways that might surprise you or that you might even miss the first read through The details are so organic to the plot so seamlessly interwoven with the story that it just feels perfect I kind of wish THIRSTY MERMAIDS had a 2020 release date because it's exactly the book we need right now

The raucous and literal fishes out of water graphic novel from prolific comic artist and writer Kat Leyh creator of the acclaimed Snapdragon and coauthor of the Eisner and GLAAD Award–winning series Lumberjanes Fresh out of shipwreck wine three tipsy mermaids decide to magically masuerade as humans and sneak onto land to indulge. Okay so this comic was definitely not what I was expecting and I absolutely loved it especially the joke involving the title Thirsty Mermaids itself Tooth Pearl and Eezy are 3 mermaids who form their own uniue pod and love life and each other with an exuberance that made me wish I was one of their human friends like Vivi the human who helps them find their land legs so to speak The themes of gender identitysexuality were done tastefully and respectfully The way mermaids and magic portrayed in this comic had a new flair to it that was unexpected but welcomed It gave me many ideas for my writing and a better understanding on how one can use magic outside of the commonality people tend to expect This story played out beautifully and I look forward to seeing by this author I really hope that there are stories involving these characters as I still have so many uestions I definitely recommend this comic to anyone who loves mermaids found family and finding a place to call home among those you love

Thirsty MermaidsIn much drinking and a whole lot of fun in the heart of a local seaside tourist trap But the good times abruptly end the next morning as through the haze of killer hangovers the trio realizes they never actually learned how to break the spell and are now stuck on land for the foreseeable future Which means everything from enlisting. It takes a minute to get used to the sense of humor of this graphic novel very raucous and sweary but by 20 pages or so in I was totally onboard and I ended up really loving it The story is some mermaids use magic to turn themselves into landlubbers towell to get drunk mostly But then of course they get stuck and have to figure out clothes and money and jobs and they make some human friends I fully laughed out loud multiple times at their shenanigans and it’s also very sweet I actually teared up at a couple points I wasn’t sure going in if this was YA or not and I think not there is a fair amount of nudity and swearing and also just feels about adult concerns It is very casually inclusivediverse with different body types a trans main character and pretty much everyone is ueer it seems Thanks to Netgalley for the ARCTW potential attempted suicide not really but seems like it at the time
