A Place to Call Home Traveling through the Wyoming wilderness all Bridger Jamison wants is a job and a safe haven for his brother Finding work with the lovely Lola Martin solves at least one of his problems An I enjoyed this bit of historical fiction It was an easy read but not exactly typical of the western boy meets girls falls in love and lives happily ever afterThere were enough twists and turns in the plot to make the book interesting without sugar coating everything In the end Lola Martin a modern for the time young woman is the local undertaker Bridger Jamison is the stranger that show up at her door with the dead body of the local sheriff in the middle of the night She is understandably frightened by this dangerous looking man who claims to have found the sheriff dead on the trail outside of town She notifies the marshal's office to ask for help in solving this murder as well a long string of mysterious deaths that have shaken her hometown of uiver CreekUnknowingly Bridger takes a job with Tyler not realizing that he is a crook and a murderer He also takes a side job making coffins for Lola a job her father did until his untimely and unexplained death Until he is moved up in the ranks of Tyler's 'gang' he doesn't realize the extent of Tyler's corruption Jake Anderson the marshal who was sent to uiver Creek is a thorough investigator who was already interested in the area because of the town's boss Ike Tyler Tyler was under suspicion for bullying the residents and businessmen of the town and its environs He was prosperous but both Bridger and Anderson sense a problem with his business dealings Anderson believes that Bridger did not kill the sheriff and enlists his aid in proving Tyler culpable in the recent spate of unexplained and convenient deaths All the while Lola and Bridger are growing closer But both are leary of commitment and do not make their feelings known to each other They both have unresolved issues to overcome before they can become close In the end they do commit themselves to each other and their individual pursuits of personal happiness and marriagge
