Probably a 35 star book Not as great as his 'The Death of Virgil' But very enjoyable nonetheless It has an understated uality much like its characters who plod through existence dependent on each other much than they realise

I felt a strong connection to the character of Richard Hieck He is drawn to mathematics as a way of connecting with his mysterious and eccentric deceased father and as a pathway to addressing the deeper philosophical issues of humans knowledge But he needs and seems to find a way to fill the gap with love The spirituality of his sister Susanne contrasts with his uest for knowledge and love but also complements it and completes it And all of the themes of knowledge love spirituality and seeking come together at the end with death There is a lot going on that Broch manages to compress into 175 pages I am looking forward to reading his other books The Sleepwalkers and The Death of Virgil
