As a Berlin scholar I always feel that any book set in Berlin needs to be read and so Brussig's Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee has been on my bookshelf awaiting reading for uite some time but someone just never seemed enticing But after happening to end up walking down the Sonnenallee the other day I figured that was as good of a reason as any to pick up and finally read this short book Summary it's cute and funny and actually gives a pretty decent insight into life in the DDR without the heavy handed versions that are often popular outside of Germany But it is also the euivalent of a chick flick movie in which nothing is too deep or tragic and all ends well for everyone So it was a good lazy day read but thinking that will stick with me for long

Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee is the book to the film I haven't seen the latter but it is said to be very different from the novelIt is set in East Berlin and describes a variety of episodes from sometimes bizarre everyday lives of people mainly teenagers in the GDRThe story is light and easy to read and even though the main characters face different troubles there is still this feeling that everything is going to be just fineI loved the humor and irony with which Brussig describes the life in the GDR As well as Micha's devotion and love to Miriam like how many boys aged 15 would go to a dancing school just to be with the girl they like Wuschel's desire to listen to illegal music of the Rolling Stones and Mario's rebellion and dreams of buying the land from the GDR in order to create a new better state Oh and I would love to read the diary that Micha wrote to Miriam must be sth very inspiring PS Something that always proves to be trueDie Hunger nach Freiheit ist größer als der Hunger nach Brot Das hat Sartre gesagt Oder Mahatma Gandhi Oder der Hunger nach Menschenrechten © Mario
