This day How do I write a review of these bundled novels that influences you to read them when I cannot even categorize them adeuately I know going into this review that my thoughts will be wholly insufficient to describe the complexity of plot the magnificently detailed world building the mastery of character and the depth of emotion despite the confounding constraint of the Twelve Systems society What I do know is that I'm hooked Addicted Bleary eyed and head achy from staying up all night reading I don't think I have ever read a book that immersed me so much in another galaxy another time another civilization another person's bodyI picked up this bundle for the great price on book two Bright Star But because I had read The Cartel The Apprentice Volume 1 so long ago I decided to skim it again in this bundle Here is my review to book one However I found myself unable to skim I was immersed completely and totally in a thorough re read of book one It was even better the second time Bright Star is a continuation of the trials and tribulations of Lilian an indentured apprentice to the most powerful man in the Third System Monsignor Lucius Mercio He has purchased her servitude for crimes against her executed father and in the Warrior standards of this fantasy society Lilian is made to pay She has fallen from favored daughter of a powerful man to someone who must submit to Monsignor's will in all things Monsignor heads a Cartel that controls the mining and refinement of Vistrite the power source for all technology and items of convenience in the Twelve Systems Maintaining control of the Cartel while simultaneously expanding its influence reuires cunning manipulation and prescience Lucius who wields his own considerable magnetism and power uses Lilian's astronomical almost unnatural intellect and her body for his advancement and pleasure Given her tainted status he also expends considerable effort keeping her alive The second book in the series winds through enemies plots alliances and allies in the Cartel and on a personal front for Lilian Others attempt to not only manipulate Lilian but harm her There is no way to do justice to the complexity of the plot Suffice it to say that if EG Manetti is including even the most innocuous passage it behooves the reader to pay attention to it; the foreshadowing the hints are masterfully done I know I am reading things of significance in book two that will probably have revelations in books five and six whenever they are written This serves to increase suspense and titillate my imagination because Manetti has created characters with resonance and honor who are threatened by circumstance and deliberation It is extremely compelling reading Lilian is one of the best heroines I've seen constructed in fantasy or sci fi She exists in unimaginably controlled circumstances with no freedom of her own and yet she has responsibility for her mother and young sister She is in a box with no lid yet her intellect manages to create the narrowest of openings She is formidable in her mind and in her training as one of Warrior Adelaide's disciples The meditations and litanies and weapons practice involved in the canon of the warriors is woven tightly throughout the story It is fascinating and so detailed that as a reader you come to a true understanding of the caste system and the offenses inherent in strict adherence to the Warrior belief system It operates too in gray areas where commoners and pirates and Universalists challenge the Warrior elite Simply put it is fascinating to comprehend There are these hints that Lilian is a reincarnation of Adelaide and Lucius is a reincarnation of Socraide yet the mystical and the practical overlap but never uite intersect This book has layers upon layersCentral to the story is the subjugation of Lilian to Lucius The second book develops their trust and trustworthiness Yet my heart breaks for the romance part of the story Lucius is married and his terminally ill yet eternally gracious wife approves of his sexual congress with Lilian In fact it is a norm of their society For me this is the most difficult and heart breaking part of the book There is no affection that can ever be implied or stated between Lucius and Lilian Yet somehow these two manage to honor and appreciate It is the promise and the dread of how Lucius and Lilian will end that keeps me reading Book source Purchased

Lian accepts an indenture contract with a powerful warrior For three years he will have total control of her body will and intellectLucius Mercio commands one of the most powerful Cartels in the Twelve Systems As clever and ambitious as he is ruthless Lucius' wealth influence and power place him among the elite of the warrior caste It is not enough Lucius intends to take his Cartel to unimaginable heights with the aid of Lilian's brilliance He faces only one obstacle Lucius must keep Lilian alive BRIGHT STAR The Apprentice Volume In the second volume in the Twelve Systems Chronicles Lilian’s enemies are determined than ever to see her destroyed A visitor from her past will endanger he. I finally got to this 2 book bundle last month and I regret not reading it sooner Don't let the glossary and list of characters intimidate you It was very helpful in navigating this civilization setup in the Twelve Systems Class and bloodlines mean everything in this societyLilian loses almost everything except her life as punishment for the high crimes of her father She's allowed to live by becoming an Apprentice indentured servantcourtesan for Lucius Mercio He's head of the fourth most powerful Cartel in the Twelve Systems and he wants to move it up to be the third most powerfulLilian is intelligent as well as beautiful and has martial arts skills learned before her family's downfall Lucius knows she's an asset to him in many ways He is cautious with his trust and demands much of her mentally and physically My opinion of Lucius went back and forth as I found out that everything is not as simple as it might appear Lilian is strong and while she accepts her fate she does not act the victim She makes friends among her new peers and helps them as much as stricture allows I will continue to read this sexy sci fi series to see what is in store for Lilian and learn about the long term plan that Lucius has set in motion

I've loved this intricate world from start to finish the odd formal speech is a little difficult to get into at first and its one you have to concentrate on not the euivalent of film where you can get up make a cuppa of take a phone call and still know what's going on in twenty minutes but the pay off as you sink into Ms Manetti's political intriguing and socially different world is well worth the effortThis is one I will come back and read again which isn't something I say very often these days
